What to expect when you join your first archery league

Archers on the line during an adult league night

The single most common reason people give for not joining a league is that they are not good enough yet.

Nobody who says that has ever been to one.

What a league night actually is

Eight weeks, one night a week, same lane, same people. You show up, you warm up, you shoot your ends, you write down your score, and you go home. It takes about ninety minutes.

That is the entire structure. The rest is people talking between ends.

The handicap makes it work

Leagues here run handicapped scoring, and it is the thing that makes a beginner and a thirty-year shooter able to compete on the same night without it being a farce.

Your first few nights establish your average. From then on you are shooting against your own average, not against the best archer in the room. Somebody who shoots 240 and improves to 255 beats somebody who shoots 290 and stays at 290. The person who gets better wins.

The practical effect is that nobody is watching your arrows and judging them. They are watching their own.

What you need to bring

Your own equipment, and closed-toe shoes. If you have been shooting lessons with our gear, talk to us before signing up. League is the point where owning a bow starts to make sense, and we would rather fit you properly than have you borrow something that does not suit you.

A release, a tab, an arm guard, and enough arrows that a bad end does not end your night. Six is comfortable.

The first night

Get there early. Fifteen minutes is plenty. You will get a lane assignment and a scorecard, and somebody will explain how scoring works on that particular league in about ninety seconds.

You will shoot worse than you do in practice. Everybody does on their first league night, because your heart rate is up and you are aware of the person next to you. By week three that is gone.

Youth league

Friday Night Lights runs for kids from age seven. Two lines, five or six o’clock, eight weeks. Same structure, shorter attention span, more noise, and honestly more fun to watch.

Parents sit on the bench. Parents do not coach from the bench. We will remind you about this kindly, once, every season.

Why people keep doing it

Ask anybody who has shot leagues here for years and they will give you an answer about accuracy, and then about a minute later they will give you the real answer, which is the same lane and the same people for eight weeks.

Archery is a solitary sport with a social season attached, and the season is the part that keeps people shooting for thirty years.
