Autumn woods at first light

The Trophy Room

Two hundred mounts. One polar bear.

People come in for a string and leave forty minutes later, because they went in the back.

It is not a display case. It is a room, and it holds a little over two hundred mounts collected across three generations of one family hunting.

North American big game, mostly, because that is what this family has spent its time chasing. British Columbia. The Yukon. A great deal of ground in between.

Walk it in order and it reads as a rough map of sixty-plus years: what was legal, what was reachable, and what a family that ran a bow shop could get to between seasons. Some of these animals were taken with equipment that would look primitive next to what is on our wall now, which is worth remembering the next time you are agonising over arrow spine.

200+

Mounts

Nobody counted precisely. It is more than two hundred.

1

Polar bear

You are not imagining how big it is.

3

Generations

Nothing here was planned. It accumulated.

The one everybody stops at

Yes, there is a polar bear.

It is the reason a certain number of people drive to Saddle Brook with no intention whatsoever of buying archery equipment.

Come and stand next to it. That is genuinely the whole pitch.

Plan a visit

Free to walk through, during store hours.

Bring your questions. Somebody here was probably standing there when it happened.

School groups

For a lot of kids it is the first time they have stood close to a moose. We will find you a time when the range is quiet enough to talk over.

Scout troops

Pairs well with a badge session on the range. Book the two together and you have an evening rather than a stop.

Just walking in

Come during store hours and go look. It costs nothing.

The room

Sixty years of it.

The life-size Sasquatch statue by the door of the pro shop

Also on staff

He works the door.

Does not say much. Never calls out. Has been here longer than some of the bows.

Talk to a pro

Come see for yourself.

Store hours, no charge, no appointment. Fifteen minutes from most of Bergen County and considerably more interesting than a shop tour.
